A famous phrase said by the US president during his campaign in 92' election "it's the economy, stupid" which implied folks would vote for their pocket book. In 08 election, it seems to have similar conditions which the economy is still in distress depending where you are. Since the race are so close, the result can go either way.
Where I live, the gasoline price increase in recent years makes almost impossible for the lower income to keep up with the gas bills. I know many Khmer may fall in the category, and families are hurting. Just wonder how is it where you live...
