If Obama wins…
Friday, October 31st, 2008Most voters have more faith in Obama to deal with the upcoming recession. The recession is inevitable, and I think we need a brilliant person like Obama, a Harvard graduate, to deal with the global economic downturn. I think he'll do an excellent job....he's sort of like a cross between Bill Clinton and John F Kennedy, slick and smart while at the same time visionary and idealistic.
Another piece of good news is that Obama intends to deepen economic ties with ASEAN, of which Cambodia is a member (see below), so Cambodia should benefit from his presidency.

US ties with ASEAN set to expand if Obama wins
Friday, October 31, 2008
WASHINGTON (AFP) — US ties with Southeast Asia could see significant expansion if Senator Barack Obama wins the White House race, as his advisors favor his participation in a key East Asian summit and the expansion of US alliances in the region.
They consider the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a largely neglected entity under President George W. Bush's administration, who has refused to participate in the 16-nation summit organised by the group.

[S. Korea] FTA with Cambodia to go into effect in November
Friday, October 31st, 2008The Ministry of Strategy and Finance said the moves follows notification by Phnom Penh on Thursday that all domestic administrative and legal processes have been completed for the open trade regime, which is expected to greatly increase two-way trade.
Under the agreement, Seoul will immediately ax import duties on 10,658 manufactured goods made in the Southeast Asian country including those for various clothing and shoes. Tariffs on 108 farm and fisheries goods including bananas, pineapples, rice, beef and pork are to be excluded because of possible impact on the local economy, the ministry said.
"Importers that provide country-of-origin verification papers issued by Cambodia's commerce ministry could import goods free of duties starting Saturday," a official said.
Bilateral trade reached US$300 million last year, with South Korea posting a surplus of $270 million.
Cambodia is the ninth Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member to ratify such a pact, with Thailand being the only holdover.
An FTA with Singapore went into effect on March 2006, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Myanmar in June 2007. Tariffs were cut for goods from the Philippines starting in January of this year, while those for Brunei Darussalam and Laos became effective in July and this month respectively.
South Korea is a late starter in the FTAs with its first going into effect in April 2004 with Chile. It has since ratified an FTA with the European Free Trade Association in September 2006, and signed a pact with the United States in late June, 2007 that is pending approval by lawmakers from both countries.

"Bilateral negotiations to resolve the border dispute with Cambodia are the best option available as other means, such as multilateral talks, international mediation, the United Nations involvement and the litigation in the International Court of Justice, will likely be a disadvantage to the Thai side" - Noppadon PattamaFormer Foreign minister Noppadon Pattama Friday released his book "I am no traitor" to defend his record relating to the Preah Vihear Temple controversy.
Noppadon resigned his office in July in the wake of a censure debate on his involvement in the Cambodian push to include the ancient temple on the World Heritage List, seen by the opposition as having repercussions on the Thai territorial integrity.
"Facts in my book will show that I am a political victim," Noppadon said.
He said opponents of Thaksin Shinawatra tried to fault him as part of their smear campaign against the ousted leader.
He denied that the joint communique he signed had put Thailand at risk for losing 4.6 square kilometers.
Bilateral negotiations to resolve the border dispute with Cambodia are the best option available as other means, such as multilateral talks, international mediation, the United Nations involvement and the litigation in the International Court of Justice, will likely be a disadvantage to the Thai side, he said.
Banned Thai Rak Thai Party executive Chaturon Chaisang said Noppadon was swept out of office by the frenzy of ultra-nationalism although he was not at fault.

The move follows claims by Cambodian officials that a statue at the "naga" staircase of the 11th-century monument were damaged by Thai grenades during clashes on October 15 that left three Cambodian soldiers and a Thai trooper dead.
Phay Siphan, Secretary of State at the Council of Ministers, said three signs will be posted around the temple on November 7 to prevent further damage to the site.
"Preah Vihear is not just Cambodian property, but world property," he told the Post Tuesday. "Cambodia and Thailand are both members of UNESCO, so we want their co-operation in protecting the temple."
Thailand's Foreign Ministry on Monday denied claims that Thai soldiers had damaged the temple. In a statement, the ministry said Thai soldiers only fired rifles, and instead accused Cambodian troops of using grenades.
Hang Soth, Director-General of the Preah Vihear Authority, said the new signs will demarcate a new protection zone to deter fighting in the area. "There will be no further shooting on the temple or in the protection zone," he said. "We will post the signs, and Thai soldiers must join us in respecting the boundary."
General Srey Doek, Commander of Cambodia's Brigade 12 stationed at the temple, said he could not comment on the new protection zone. "We are waiting to receive orders from higher levels about whether to remove our troops from the temple," he told the Post.
