I just want to wish everyone a wonderful New Year and to thank you for being a part of our wonderful and growing community.
Although I currently live in Cambodia, in some ways I feel that I had never left the U.S. at all since I spend so much time on the computer (I hope you guys have a better life than I do!)
Anyway, have a joyous and prosperous 2009!

Have you ever noticed most of us have with strangers? Why Are we afraid of them? What keeps us from opening our heart to people we dn't know ?
I dn't really know the answes to these questions, but i do know that there is virtually always a parellel between our attitude toward strangers and our overall level of happiness. In other words , it's unusual to find a person who walks aroud with her head down, frowning and looking away from people, who is secretly a peaceful, joyful person.
I'm not suggesting it's better to be outgoing than introverted, that you need o expend tons of extra energy trying to bringten others' days, or tha you should preten to be friendly. I am suggeting, however, that if you think of srangers as being a little more like you and treat them not only with kindness and respect but smiles and eye contactas well, you'll probably notice some pretty nice change in yourself. You'll begin to see that most people are just like you _ most of them have families , people they love , troubles , concerns, likes, dislikes, fears, and so forth. You'll also notice how nice and grateful people can be when you're he first one to reach out. When you see how similar we all are, you begin to see the innocence in all of us . In other words , ven though we often mess up, most of us doing the best that we know how with the circumstances that suround us. Along with seeing the innocence in people come a profound feeling of inner happiness.

This is the Biddhist teaching that i learned over ten years ago. It has provided me , again and again , with greatly needed perspective to guide me toward my goal of a more accepting self.
The essence of this teaching is that all of life is in a constaint state of change. Everything has begining and everything has an end. Every tree begin with a seed and will eventually transform back into the earth. Every rock is formed and every rock will vanish. In our modern world, this means that every car, every machine , every piece of clothing is created and all will ear out and crumble: it's only a matter of when . Our bodies are born and they will die . A glass is created and will eventually break.
There is peace to be found in teaching . When you expect something to break , you're not surprised or disappointed when it does. Instead of becoming immobilized when something is destroyed, you feel grateful for the ime you have had.
The easies place to start is with the simple things, a glassof water, of example.Pull out your favorite drinking glass. Take a moment to look at and appriciae its beauty and all it does for you. Now , imagine that same glass as already broke, shattered all over the floor . Try to maintain the perspective that , in time, everything disintergrates and return to its initail form.
Obviously , no one wants their favourite drinking glass, or anything else , to be broke. This philosophy is not a prescription for becoming passive or apathetic, but for making peace with the way thing are. When your drinking water glass does break, this philosophy allo you to maintain your perspective. Rather than thinking , " Oh my God , " you'll find yourself thinking , : Ah, there is goes. " Play with this awareness and you'll find yourself not only keeping your cool but appreciating life as never before. :)
